Port Dover Ontario, August 10, 1921 While excavating here today, builders uncovered a skeleton, evidently of a powerful man of long ago. Most of the skeleton crumbled to dust. From what was salvaged of the skull, with its massive jaws and teeth, it is certain that there were men of might in those days, possibly eight feet in height. As the skeleton was found in the huddled position used by the Atawandrons when interring their dead, it is presumed that it is that of some Indian warrior.

The Wiltshire Archaeological and Natural History Magazine, 1876 Very different was the stature of some skeletons found at Lundy Island, in the Bristol Channel, a few years ago, of which the writer procured the following account for Dr. Thurnam from the son of Mr. Heaven, the chief resident on the island: "The skeletons were found on the top of the island, about 2 feet underground, in digging foundations for a wall for farm buildings. The number of the more perfect skeletons was seven, lying in a row with the heads to the West. The first in the row, a male, measured 8 feet 5 inches ; by the head were placed two upright stones with the head lying in a little hollow, and protected by a third stone. None of the others had any appearance of coffins by them but great numbers of limpet shells. The one measured was measured by my father, by whose orders the remains were buried again, but I am afraid much injured by the workmen in doing so. Some pottery and some beads were found with them, Mr. Etheridge, then curator of the British Institution, showed some of the pottery to a friend of his, an antiquary, I believe, who said it was undoubtedly the Ancient British.

The Evening Times., September 16, 1897 A PETRIFIED GIANT DUG UP. Italian Laborers Unearth a Stone Man Eight Feet long. New Haven, Conn., Sept. 16. Two Italians, while digging yesterday on the premises of Deputy Sheriff Arthur Plumb, near Trumoull Church, dicovered a petrified giant. Before Plumb lived upon the place it was occupied by Birdseye Plumb, who died many years ago. He used to tell his children of a giant named Christian Peterson, a Swed, who died 150 years ago. When the petrified giant was unearthed the traditions of the old town were recalled, and Sheriff Plumb says that this stone giant Is no doubt the petrified remains of Christian Peterson sheriff f Plumb said he would present the stone figure to the Fairfield Historical Society.
